Barcelona: A mediocre city for *mediocre* people!

Lately, I have been to Barcelona for the 3rd CoreGRID Workshop on Grid Middlewares. The university where the conference has been held, was furnished with old computers, I have seen an Olivetti and also this VAX.
After the conference I had the opportunity to visit this strange city. The city is quite huge.. so you need to take the metro, but you also need to be prepared to walk. :)
So, The "Sagrada Famiglia" (from Gaudi') was the first thing I wanted to see.
This church is strange (I have to admit I've never seen something like that)... but for God's sake... Spanish make u pay (8 euro) to visit the inside of the church... which is under construction. You pay for what? To see people working (after 200 years... using the new technologies... they are still working on it??)?
Furthermore, if you want to go on the top of the church, you need to take a lift which costs further 2 euro (is not possible to use stairs... what the hell!)
And, what can u see from the top??? Nothing... there is nothig... just stairs, stairs... and the view of Barcelona (a city like 1000 else because there are no monuments to see, just regular houses :( ).

After the church I walked for around half an hour... to reach this "dildo-building". I was not able to understand the meaning of that (I hope to receive some comments about it). It seems the name is Glòries... but no idea about the function! :(
Then, I've taken the metro with destination... "Las Rambla", practically the main street of this city. So... what's spacial about this street?? Nothing, the street is like evry other street in the world, full of shops... bars...
and street artists like these

nothing else... so the main attraction of the city is that? A couple of mediocre people who try to make money begging charity?? And tourists walking up and down making fun of them?? Yes, here u are Bercelona! (there is *really* nothing else to see)
So I walked for hours around this part of the city (which is the oldest part) and something came into my mind? Where (the fuck) are the statues of the people who died for the Spain? You know... when a warrior, the head of an army conquers something... it has been usually celebrated with statues around the city. The most common is to put the general on an horse where the position of the horse depicts how he is died. (if the horse stands on 4 legs it means he is died for natural reasons... if stands on the inferior legs.. he is died during a battle... etc...).

The funny thing is that there are no such kind of statues in Barcelona. I've only found this one after hours
I think... he is the only man who died for this city, while the others were having fun on the beach. Probably you can thing this is a stupid thing... but if you know the Spanish people, the way they are (lazy...) everything starts to have sense.

And every time, they find the way to steal your money (just like in Naples). Inside the church... if you want to take a picture of the crypt... you need to pay to turn on the lights. I have no words for that...
One of the things I'll never forget from the Spain... is the food! Here food is quite cheap (u need to find the right places of course) and very very good.
I'll never forget this steak... for only 12 euro. And... here u are the beach! Of course full of people! Nice :) in Italy a building like that will be called an "ECO-MONSTER", because the ambiental impact is too high! But here... it seems everything is ok! W the communists! (of course I am sarcastic!)
So, what to say about this city? If you want to have fun... probably is the best place, but if you want to see interesting things, if you want to smell the real history, please don't waste your time visiting a nation which has preferred to conquer the South America (mile and miles away) fighting against people who used the arc and arrow because they were no able to defeat French people! come to Italy.

29th, 30th of May: Walking around in Kunming

During my last 2 days in China I walked around this city, Kunming. This is city is huge, I don't know how many people live here... I think they are kind of millions!

This is the center of the city, where there is a lake, called Green Lake (I think because the water is green here :) )

Beside old places the city is full of very tall buildings.
And of course there are also McDonalds (actually a place where to eat safe food! :) you really don't know what you eat around the city... but you DO know that in a McDonald you are going to eat junk food... and sometimes that's nice! :) )
oh my god... 2 Chinese angels! :)

She is praying for more fun! :)

Inside a Buddish temple! :) Ohhmmmm....

Oh my god... Buddha is Nazist!

28th of May 2008: The Stone Forest

The Stone Forest is one of the scenic places in the Yunnan province. The Stone Forest is one of the UNESCO patrimonies.

Our guide is dressed with typical clothes, actually this hat is very interesting... it has got two ears and that's means this girl is single. When the hat has only one ear... it means the girl has a boyfriend. Finally, when the hat has no ears... it means the girl is married! :) That's a nice idea! :P

In this baboo made house we had a lot of Chinese tea... of different kinds black, white, green...etc... I don't like tea! :( I want the italian coffee!!!! :)

28th of May 2008: Visiting a chinese wine producer

Here we are at the Chinese wine producer... Chinese + wine??... I guess there is something wrong here! :)
Wow... this fountain is full of wine... so what? We use to have a bath into the wine... :)

My Australian friend, Andrew
So... this company is a red wine producer... and they are giving us white wine?

And then let's have launch in this typical place...

so... what to say? another day in China eating spicy food! :)

26th, 27th of May 2008: Something smell bad

The conference moved in this place called Mile (150 Km from Kunming). The trip towards this city was very bad. The county streets in China are full of holes and very bad. After 3 hours of journey we arrived to this 5 stars hotel...
Furbished with everything you *really* need :)Anyway... after few minutes in this high level hotel I started to realize something!

When you go around... and everything starts to smell very bad... probably that's means it's not the place but it's YOU! :)

So, after 4 days wearing the same pants and socks you really need to make something. I tried to wear my pants in the revers side... but the sensation was not so comfortable, and the smell also the same :) so I had to took a very drastic decision... wash my clothes!

If your pants are wet, and you have to go to have dinner... you have only two options: use the drier... or wear your jeans without pants. So, considering that I am aware of the Global Warming problem... I decided to go in the GREEN way, so the second option! :)

I forget to take a picture, but among these foods there was a plate full of fried bees... The conference continues for another day. However, most of the invited papers didn't show up; anyway it was not so bad for me because, fortunately, the papers I was interested on made their talks.

And the last day... even in China... I've got a picture with this cute girl called Bingjing. The Italian Latin Lover strikes again! :)
Unfortunately, I've practically fallen in love with this girl... but as usual she didn't consider me at all! ...The malediction of a nerd strikes again :'(

25th of May 2008: Discovering chinese culture: Food & Girls! :)

The first day, the conference committee bring us to a special dinner. We went in this typical Chinese restaurant where we watch a nice folkloristic show during the dinner.

Chinese girls are very shy when you try to take a picture...

In the picture below one of the thing we have eaten. I don't know which is the name and which are the ingredients... but actually I remember it was very very spicy! :) In Kunming everything is spicy! (and you cannot drink fresh water... just hot tea :( )
